What is a BEV?
Mahindra has announced its plans to setup an EV (Electric Vehicle) manufacturing Facility in Pune, Maharasthra with an investment of 10,000 crore. Notably this investment plan will span over eight years to build a manufacturing plant and develop the Born Electric Vehicle (BEVs). So what is a BEV? How is it different from other Electric Vehicle? Read on to know more.
Before jumping into BEV, we should know that there many option for a customer who is looking to buy an Electric Vehicle today. They can find all types, including options that rely on fuel cells or combine a gas engine in hybrid and plug-in hybrids. In general there are various different main categories of Electric Vehicles: the battery powered vehicle (BEV), often referred to as the standard EV, the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), and the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). Additionally, each type has subsets.
Battery Electric Vehicles, also called BEVs as mentioned are the ones that we usually intent when we say Electric Vehicle. They are fully electric vehicles with rechargeable batteries and no gasoline engine. All energy to run the vehicle comes from the battery pack which is recharged from the grid. BEVs are zero emissions vehicles, as they do not generate any harmful tailpipe emissions or air pollution hazards caused by traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. There are some benefits that are exclusive to BEVs:
Simplicity: The simplicity of the BEV is one of its biggest advantages. There are so few moving parts in a battery electric vehicle that very little maintenance is required. There are no oil changes or other fluids like engine oil, resulting in few tune-ups that are required for a BEV.
Cost-savings: The savings from reduced maintenance expenses can add up to significant savings over the lifetime of the vehicle. Also, fuel costs are generally higher when using the gas-powered combustion engine versus electric power. Depending on the driving routine of a PHEV, the total cost of ownership over the electric car battery lifespan can be comparable to or even more expensive than that for a BEV.
Climate benefits: When you drive fully electric, you can rest easy knowing that you’re contributing to a cleaner environment by moving the world away from gas. An internal combustion engine releases planet-warming CO2 emissions, as well as toxic chemicals like nitrous oxides, volatile organic compounds, fine particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone, and lead. EVs are more than four times more efficient than gas-powered cars. Moreover, EVs typically draw their electricity from the grid, which is shifting to renewables more broadly every day.
Riding comfort: There is no doubting that driving an entirely electric vehicle is enjoyable.
People who own electric vehicles are extremely satisfied with them thanks to the quiet acceleration, the absence of offensive exhaust fumes, and the easy handling.
A substantial portion of the electric vehicles now on the market are produced and
manufactured at a few hubs throughout the globe.China, in particular, has surged to the top of EV production as a result of government initiatives implemented several years ago. With policies to promote EV manufacturing and sales, the US and a few other major nations followed suit.
Even when the maintance cost and the fuel charges are reduced for an Electric Vehicle, the initial amount spent is substantially higher that fuel combustion ones. Thus electric vehicle become one of your most important investment. Taking care of them becomes very important.
